Free payment receipt template
A payment receipt acknowledges money actually received. Use this simple record to identify the payer, recipient, amount and what the payment covers. It records a payment without turning it into a release of claims or debt settlement.
A starting point, with limits. These general U.S. templates have not been reviewed by an attorney. They are not legal advice or tailored to your state or situation. Read the full agreement and its limitations; get legal advice when needed.

Know the limits of this template.
- A general U.S. starting point, not legal advice or an attorney-reviewed document. State rules and the facts of your transaction may require changes.
- Only issue a receipt for an actual payment. This tool does not verify banking activity or guarantee funds have cleared.
- Not a tax invoice, charitable donation acknowledgment, debt release, lien waiver or settlement agreement. Specialized receipts may have additional legal requirements.
- Keep your own signed receipt and supporting records. Generating a document here does not establish tax deductibility or satisfy every recordkeeping requirement.
eSignPDF adds a visible signature. It does not verify identity, provide notarization, certify a digital signature, or create an audit trail.
About this template
What is the difference between a receipt and an invoice?
An invoice requests payment; a receipt acknowledges a payment already received. If payment is still due, use an invoice rather than saying funds were received.
Can this receipt record a partial payment?
Yes. State what the payment covers and enter the remaining balance for that invoice or obligation, if known. An unknown balance is not treated as zero, and the receipt does not settle any disputed debt.
Does signing the receipt waive further payment or claims?
This draft acknowledges only the specified payment. It does not add a release, settlement, lien waiver or promise that unrelated obligations are paid. Use separate, tailored documentation for those purposes.
What records should I keep with a payment receipt?
Keep the receipt with the related invoice or agreement and evidence of payment. For business records, identifying the parties, amount, date and purpose helps document the transaction. More than one supporting document may be necessary.
