Free statement of work template
A statement of work (SOW) captures the details of one project under an existing service agreement. Define what is included, what is excluded, when it is due and how the client will review the result.
A starting point, with limits. These general U.S. templates have not been reviewed by an attorney. They are not legal advice or tailored to your state or situation. Read the full agreement and its limitations; get legal advice when needed.
When to use it
- Adding a defined project to an existing signed service agreement.
- Documenting a new phase with its own deliverables and milestones.
- Confirming assumptions, client responsibilities and acceptance criteria before starting.

Know the limits of this template.
- A general U.S. starting point, not legal advice or an attorney-reviewed document. State rules and the facts of your transaction may require changes.
- This SOW is an attachment to an existing signed agreement, not a complete standalone contract. Use the freelance service agreement if you need a starting agreement.
- The existing agreement controls legal terms, including ownership, confidentiality, liability, termination and governing law. Review both documents together for conflicts.
eSignPDF adds a visible signature. It does not verify identity, provide notarization, certify a digital signature, or create an audit trail.
About this template
What is a statement of work?
A statement of work describes a particular project: its scope, deliverables, schedule, price, responsibilities and acceptance criteria. This version supplements a separately identified service agreement.
Can I use this SOW without a service agreement?
This template is designed as an attachment to an existing agreement. It intentionally leaves general legal terms to that agreement. Start with the freelance service agreement if you do not already have one.
How specific should acceptance criteria be?
Use observable results, such as required file formats, listed features or documented review steps. State included revision rounds and a review period so both sides can distinguish a correction from a new request.
Does the SOW change who owns the deliverables?
Not by itself. This version leaves ownership and licensing to the governing agreement and does not add an assignment. Resolve any conflicting project terms before either party signs.

Access stops at expiry. Cleanup runs every minute to permanently delete encrypted files from private object storage, retrying if the service is unavailable. We do not keep document backups for new requests. Minimal request metadata can remain in database recovery history; files uploaded before this storage change may remain in older backups.
